Energy Scenario Challenges and Prospects for Pakistan

Policy Perspectives, Volume 8 , Number 1, January – June 2011

Abstract

[The global demand for oil and gas is rising while the reserves are fast depleting with no major new discoveries made in recent years. Prices are also expected to rise, with forecast for oil as high as $ 200 a barrel. In addition, global energy politics is increasing the fears of an unprecedented shock to come. Pakistan, finding itself amidst one of the worst energy crisis needs to focus, on one hand, on developing its available resources such as hydro, coal and renewables, and to further explore the collaborative approaches at the regional level, on the other. An integrated approach is needed, with creation of single federal ministry of the energy sector and bringing structural changes in the institutions involved. – Ed ]-
