40th issue of Maghrib aur Islam discusses West-influenced education in developing countries

Maghrib aur Islam, a quarterly Urdu journal of IPS, is a valuable resource for understanding Western perceptions about the Islamic world, and for building the basis of constructive dialogue and engagement between the two sides and discarding the thesis of ‘Clash of Civilizations.’

The latest issue of the journal discusses the growing concerns among developing countries about their academic institutions becoming the flag-bearers of Western ideology, culture, and hegemony. It is especially evident in the social sciences education where native cultures and customs have been completely ignored in the West-influenced curriculums. Instead of enlightening human minds with the values of well being, the modern Western academics are only engaging them in the pursuit of revenues, market and economy, hence making education essentially a commercial and profit-seeking venture. Such practices only pave way for retaining and promoting Western neocolonialism in the developing regions by adopting business-oriented approaches in academics in lieu of human welfare.

The recent issue presents the viewpoint on the subject from visionary scholars and intellectuals from the Asian, African and other regions.

The publication is a recommended reading for MA Islamic Studies in many universities in Pakistan.
