A three-member delegation of Salamworld – an upcoming social and business networking portal for the Muslim world – including the Secretary General of its Executive Board, Nedim Kaya, Spokesperson Yavuz Selim Kurt and member Muhammad Abdullah Bidzhi visited Institute of Policy Studies on 29 June 2012 to apprise different stakeholders in Pakistan about the exciting web portal.

Salamworld is headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey and its beta version is expected to be launched next month.

It may be mentioned that DG-IPS Khalid Rahman had visited Istanbul last February to attend an international conference hosted by Salamworld, which was attended by leaders, scholars, celebrities and media and IT professionals from more than 30 Muslim countries across the world.

The site will be available in eight languages: English, Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, and Russian, with others to be added later. Its creators want to tap into the large number of Muslim internet users, presently around 350 million, and hope to have 50 million users in five years.

The major difference between Salamworld and other social networks will be the filtering of “offensive” content like pornography, and anything inciting terrorist activity or human rights violations.

“The content that is being used on other social networks is not very secure and full of haram [forbidden material],” Nedim Kaya, told the IPS team members in a presentation during his visit to the Institute.

IPS also coordinated meetings of the Salamworld delegation with a number of top Pakistani social and religious leaders in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad such as Abdus Sattar Edhi, founder of Edhi Trust; Dr Amjad Saqib, founder of Akhuwat Foundation, Professor Dr Sahibzada Sajid-ur-Rahman, DG Dawah Academy, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) and Dr Idrees Zubair of Al-Huda International along with a number of top professionals of IT sector and social media in Pakistan.
